From my point of view, art and design are closely related and balance one another. The boundaries that separate the two are often blurred or overlap one another. Both focus on creativity, imagination, and craft. They complement one another: art focuses on aesthetics, emotion, or an expression of ideas, beauty, or feelings; design is about providing functional, practical solutions, but should also be alluring and visually pleasing.
Some say they’re diametrically opposed, and at times they are. But from my experience, design is more effective when supported with compelling art. And art that applies design principles—contrast, balance, and proportion among others—is successful more often than not. At least that’s the way I see it. —Scott Johnson
