Support American Arts and Culture

Dear Sen. Todd Young, Sen. Jim Banks, and Rep. Andre Carson,

I am writing to urge your continued support for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). These vital institutions do far more than fund art projects or preserve historical artifacts—they strengthen the very fabric of communities across the United States.

In towns and cities both large and small, the presence of vibrant arts and cultural initiatives is not a luxury; it is a necessity. They play a crucial role in retaining residents and attracting visitors by making our communities more livable, dynamic, and humane. While commercial development has its place in building a welcoming environment, it is the arts and humanities that elevate our sense of place, history, and connection to one another. They open us up to new ideas, deeper emotions, and broader understanding—fostering a sense of shared humanity that commercial ventures alone cannot replicate.

Furthermore, arts and cultural organizations often work hand-in-hand with civic entities, educational institutions, and local businesses to produce events and experiences that generate meaningful economic development. These partnerships have a multiplying effect: they not only bring in tourism dollars but also inspire innovation, draw talent, and provide platforms for community dialogue and engagement. Simply put, without the foundational support of the NEA, NEH, and IMLS, many of these transformative opportunities would never be realized.

The impact of the arts and humanities cannot always be measured in simple economic terms—but their value is felt deeply in how they enrich our communities, connect us to each other, and help define who we are. I ask that you continue to support robust funding for these essential institutions so that all Americans, no matter where they live, can benefit from the cultural vitality and opportunity they help sustain.

Thank you for your time, your service, and your consideration.

Sincerely,

Scott Johnson, Indianapolis, Indiana
